Chinese warplane violates Korea’s air defense zone again

A Chinese military plane violated South Korea’s air defense identification zone (KADIZ) again, prompting the Air Force to deploy its fighters to drive it out, Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

The plane, presumed to be its Y-9 surveillance aircraft, first entered the KADIZ at 10:05 a.m. from an area west of Ieodo, a submerged rock south of Jeju Island, and exited the zone at 10:53 a.m. It later reentered the zone two more times before its last exit at 1:36 p.m.

A country declares an air defense identification zone for the early identification of foreign military aircraft approaching its airspace.

Chinese warplanes are known to have breached the zone more than two dozen times this year alone. Analysts presume that foreign warplanes have intentionally breached the KADIZ to glean information about Korea’s military radar frequencies needed for potential jamming operations in case of a conflict, or to test its defense readiness.

North Korea warns Japan it could see missiles overflying country

Japanische Darstellung 2 (jsd).

North Korea warned that Japan could again see missiles overflying the country “in the not distant future” after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called Pyongyang’s latest test of a large multiple-rocket launcher a “ballistic missile” launch.

North Korea launched two short-range projectiles into the sea off its east coast Thursday in the fourth known test of its new “super-large multiple-rocker launcher,” with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un voicing “great satisfaction” over the latest test.

After that firing, Abe and other top Japanese officials characterized the weapon a ballistic missile, labeling it a threat to Japan and the international community. Pyongyang is banned from firing ballistic missiles under United Nations Security Council resolutions.
